چکیده

Reactions of chloroform over triphenylphosphine-protected Au nanoparticles have been studied using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and a spin trapping technique. Two competing reactions, abstraction of hydrogen and halogen atoms, were identified. The hydrogen abstraction reaction showed an inverse kinetic isotope effect. Treatment of nanoparticles with oxidizing or reducing reagents made it possible to tune the selectivity of radical formation from halogen to hydrogen (deuterium) abstraction. Treatment with PbO(2) promoted the deuterium abstraction reaction followed by the loss of nanoparticle activity, whereas treatment with NaBH(4) regenerated the nanoparticle activity towards Cl atom abstraction. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed an increased Au:P ratio upon treatment with oxidizing reagents. This is likely due to the oxidation of some phosphine ligands to phosphine oxides which then desorb from the nanoparticle surface.

Insights into catalysis by gold nanoparticles and their support effects through surface science studies of model catalysts.

One important aid in understanding catalysis by gold nanoparticles would be to understand the strength with which they bond to different support materials and the strength with which they bond adsorbed intermediates, and how these strengths depend on nanoparticle size. We present here new measurements of adsorption energies by single crystal adsorption calorimetry, and new analyses of other rec...

Single-Molecule Kinetics Reveals a Hidden Surface Reaction Intermediate in Single-Nanoparticle Catalysis

Detecting and characterizing reaction intermediates is not only important and powerful for elucidating reaction mechanisms but also challenging in general because of the low populations of intermediates in a reaction mixture. Studying surface reaction intermediates in heterogeneous catalysis presents additional challenges, especially the ubiquitous structural heterogeneity among the catalyst pa...

Facile synthesis of gold nanoparticles with narrow size distribution by using AuCl or AuBr as the precursor.

Gold(I) halides, including AuCl and AuBr, were employed for the first time as precursors in the synthesis of Au nanoparticles. The synthesis was accomplished by dissolving Au(I) halides in chloroform in the presence of alkylamines, followed by decomposition at 60 degrees C. The relative low stability of the Au(I) halides and there derivatives eliminated the need for a reducing agent, which is u...

Structurally Similar Triphenylphosphine-Stabilized Undecagolds, Au11(PPh3)7Cl3 and [Au11(PPh3)8Cl2]Cl, Exhibit Distinct Ligand Exchange Pathways with Glutathione

Ligand exchange is frequently used to introduce new functional groups on the surface of inorganic nanoparticles or clusters while preserving the core size. For one of the smallest clusters, triphenylphosphine (TPP)-stabilized undecagold, there are conflicting reports in the literature regarding whether core size is retained or significant growth occurs during exchange with thiol ligands. During...

Reversible phase transfer and fractionation of Au nanoparticles by pH change.

The reversible transfer of Au nanoparticles between water and chloroform phases by pH change was achieved by using a long-chain amine derivative. Further, we demonstrated that the phase transfer method was very effective for the fractionation of Au nanoparticles according to their crystal facet distinction.
